August's Birthday Bloom ~The Gladiolus

August birthday blooms are fierce and fiery with a dash of bold. You'll find a flower worthy of being known as the flower of the Gladiator. Gladiolus resemble honor and remembrance. They can also represent the strength of character, never giving up, faithfulness and integrity or infatuation.

Standing tall and proud, the Gladiola can reach a height of 4 feet tall. They create a long spire of blooms starting from the bottom and working its way to the top. They have been referred to as "sword flowers" since they have long thick blades of grass.

Often used in floral displays and grown in cutting gardens these flowers will bloom in bold, bright oranges and reds to shades of pastel blues, pinks, and yellows.

* In England they used the powdered roots of the gladiolus to make a poultice for wounds.
* Many gladiolus roots are poisonous causing skin irritations.
